A variety of wine grape of Spanish origin, the Girò variety is found throughout the southern half of Sardinia where it is used to make a port-like sweet liqueur wine. Girò was extensively planted in the first half of the 18th century when the island was governed by the Piedmontese. In the 1950s phylloxera devastated Sardinia's vineyards and, when the vines were replanted, most growers chose to plant Girò grapes, partly because of productivity and partly because of the ease with which they grow.
