Mantis shrimp. Squill. A large crustacean from the eastern coast of North America and the Mediterranean related to a crab rather than a prawn, larger than a prawn and bearing some resemblance to a praying mantis.
"Mantis shrimps in the style of Abruzzo." Mantis shrimps cooked in wine and served with lemon, oil and hot chillis.
"Pipes (in the style of Sicily)." A Sicilian dish of tubes of slightly bubbly pastry made with Marsala wine and fried until they are golden brown. They are filled with sweetened ricotta cheese mixed with candied peel and nuts, sometimes chunks of chocolate, deep-fried and sprinkled with icing sugar. They look a little like brandy snaps. Sometimes the filling is mixed with Amaretto liqueur.
