Tocai friulano

/toh-KAH-ee fryoo-LAH-noh/
[Italian]

A variety of grape. It is used in the production of fresh white wines from Friuli-Venezia Giulia. However, the EU in Brussels decreed that, by March 2007, this wine, known since 1771, should relinquish its name which may be confused with Tokay of Hungary, which had just joined the Union. Tokay (in English) is actually known as Tokaji in Hungary but it is still felt that this could be confused. Tokay d'Alsace is in the same predicament. There were attempts to rename the wine as 'Friulano' but these failed and the wine literally now, in January 2008, has no name. Serious wine drinkers would always know the difference between the Hungarian and the Italian and French wines, and non-serious wine drinkers wouldn’t really be bothered, so this was all rather pointless.
