Rock partridge. The rock partridge is found only in Europe in the Alps, Italy and through the Balkans into Greece, usually in mountain settings.
Ptarmigan. For much of the year the ptarmigan is simlar to the red or willow grouse, with a touch of white on the wings. In winter both sexes become pure white (as does the willow grouse). However, its habitat is quite different as it prefers barren, stony mountain slopes, usually higher up than the willow grouse.
"Partridge in the style of Chartres." An elaborate dish of partridge in a mould with cabbage, bacon, sausage and vegetables.
Grey partridge. A lovely partridge, the male of which has a grey breast and terra cotta face and with dark, almost pigeon-like flesh. This is a gregarious bird which is seen in a tight-knit flock, usually beside or in cultivated fields where it can find the seeds and leaves it eats. Grey partridge are more numerous in the United Kingdom and have a more delicate flavour than the less common red-legged partridge.
