A name for sand whiting, a fish found in schools over sandy bottoms in open bays and estuaries and with firm, flaky flesh.
Opah or moonfish, also, confusingly, known as the sunfish. This can be a huge fish, up to 50 kilos in weight. We saw one in an aquarium and it looked positively prehistoric. However the meat is good, pink and firm and can be treated like tuna, eaten raw as sushi, fried or grilled or even roasted.
Sunflowers produce seeds which provide sunflower oil. The seeds are themselves edible. The leaves can be used as cattle fodder, so it is an invaluable crop. The flower heads can be enormous and are often used to represent the sun. A field of sunflowers will face the sun all day, turning slowly as the world rotates, and changing the appearance of the field completely.
