green school prawn

[English] plural green school prawns

A name for school prawns. Other prawns may be sold under the name of school prawns, in particular bay prawns and Endeavour prawns. However, they are most commonly Metapenaeus macleayi, which is translucent (looking grey when heaped up in the market) with green or brown speckling. They are usually around 8 cm (3") in total body length. They are fished in sandy bottoms near river mouths.

Greensleeves apple

Similar to Golden Delicious, this is a crisp, medium-sized eating apple with pale green skin turning to yellow and slightly pink flesh. It was raised by Dr F Alston at East Malling Research Station in Kent in 1966 as a cross between James Grieve and Golden Delicious. It was introduced commercially in 1977 and received the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Merit in 1981. This is a prolific and disease-resistant variety which is self-fertile. This mid-season variety is harvested from mid-September in South-East England but does not store well.

green smelt

Atlantic silverside or sandsmelt. A slender, round, oily marine fish which grows up to18 cm (7”). It is long with a translucent green back and silver bands lengthways along the sides and caught in estuaries along the coast of the eastern United States. It is usually deep-fried or grilled. In the United States these are often called whitebait. When tiny they are treated in the same way as whitebait in the UK.

A tea made with unfermented leaves fro the same plant as black teas but unoxidised. This gives it a clear, golden colour and flavour, and it is very fragrant. It is served without milk and is made with water at just below boiling point. In Japan it is brewed in tiny pots to prevent it from becoming bitter as it cools.

Green Zebra tomato

An heirloom cordon tomato which produces medium small, 5 cm (2") diameter uniform round fruit, greenish amber with darker green vertical stripes ripening to a yellow colour. It has green flesh, with a mild, but good flavour. It is a mid to late season ripener and tricky to grow but a heavy cropper. It should be started early and grown under cover. Great salad tomato, used by Alice Waters in Chez Panisse in Berkely. Indeterminate.

Grenadier apple

A medium to large early baking apple with yellowish-green skin recorded since 1862. It was exhibited at the Crystal Palace Show in 1863 by Charles Turner of Slough. It was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society First Class Certificate in 1883. It cooks down to a pale cream purée. This very early-season variety is harvested from mid-August in South-East England and does not store well.
