Golden needles are the unopened buds of a type of day lily, used in Chinese cooking. They require soaking before use and often have to be secured while cooking to prevent them from falling apart.
An excellent medium to large apple which cooks well and has good flavour. It is yellow with occasional pale russeting. It was discovered in an orchard in Downham Market in Norfolk by the Head Gardener of Sir Thomas Hare of Stowe Hall. His name was Patrick Flanagan. There was a 'Golden Noble' listed in 1769 by Mr William Prefect of Pontefract, but it may also be of French origin, perhaps the same as Drap d'Or. It almost collapses on cooking but is good for pies. This mid-season variety is harvested from early October in South-East England and is at its best from October to December.
Shiitake mushrooms, which may be grilled or used in soups and stews. In Russia they are frequently pickled.
This heirloom cherry tomato bears gold-coloured, thumbnail-sized pearl tomatoes. Fruits are borne in luscious, grape-like clusters.
A variety of eating apple of uncertain origin but which may have arisen near Arundel in Sussex, at Parham Park and was first recorded in 1629. This apple apparently does well in northern Portugal but an attempt was made by George Washington to introduce it to the United States, where it did not flourish. It is late-season apple which is harvested from South-East England in early-October is stored and is at its best from October to November.
The most sought-after variety of plover. If they are eaten, they are usually gutted and roasted and served on buttered toast and garnished with lemon and watercress.

An indeterminate variety of heirloom tomato popular in Europe in the 1880s. Bushy, disease-resistant plants produce sweet, round, yellowish-orange fruits having a pink blush and weighing around 225-350 g (8-12 oz) mid season. Suitable for slicing.
An old variety of red flushed eating apple known since the mid-1600s. It has crisp, hard flesh that crumbles, similar to Blenheim Orange. It keeps its shape if it is cooked. It is a late-season variety, picked from early October in South-East England, is stored and is at its best between November to January.
