Golden grouper. A brown grouper found in the eastern and southern Mediterranean.
False chanterelle. As its name implies, this masquerades as a chanterelle but, instead of the egg yellow of the chanterelle, this is a darker orange and sometimes with a graded cap, dark at the centre and becoming lighter towards the edges. The false chanterelle is found in woodland, particularly under pines. It is edible, but is rather bitter and tough and may cause indigestion. It is easily confused with other mushrooms which are poisonous, so especial care must be taken.
Poor cod. A small bony fish resembling smelt and with the same cucumber smell when fresh, and treated in the same way as whiting.
Pout or bib. A coastal fish, similar to poor cod, shaped like an elongated triangle with a copper-coloured back and silvery sides and belly. It is about 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) long. It has a short barbel on its lower jaw, long thin pelvic fins and two abdominal fins connected by a membrane, The flesh is lean, but rather flavourless and has many bones. It deteriorates rapidly, and so should be prepared very quickly.
A slang word for a shot. A shot is somewhere between 1.5 fl oz (~44 ml) and 50 ml, depending on where you are. It may also be a small cup.
Whitefish. Pollan or vendace. A small relation of char or lake whitefish and is a slightly oily freshwater fish Lake Geneva, prepared in the same way as trout. It can be baked or fried.
