Golden grey mullet. A fish from the grey mullet (US: striped mullet) family. It has gold spots on its head and at the front of the body.
An unsalted soft cheese made from sheep’s milk which can be used as a substitute for cottage cheese. Generally served as an eating cheese, or used in sweet or savoury pies.
Dark brown seeds that are used to make table mustard and in curries. They are the seeds of an annual herb of the cabbage family which bears yellow flowers.
Calabash. Some types of gourd are described as calabashes. There is a sweet calabash used from the United States to Africa and Sri Lanka. In Japan the flesh of some calabashes is dried, cut into thin strips and used to garnish soups. When dried the fruits can be hollowed out and used as bowls or formed into kitchen utensils.
A bottle gourd or calabash cucumber which is pale green on the outside, creamy, yellowish-white inside and looks like a cucumber with a bulge at one end. Only the very young gourds are used for cooking. When older they are most commonly known as calabash and develop a hard, woody shell which may be used for making bowls and musical instruments.
