Chayote. Custard marrow. A Central American food plant, it is a bulbous, pear-shaped gourd which grows on a vine, with pale green, ridged skin and about the size of an avocado. It is a bland vegetable, somewhat like a cucumber in flavour, with a little spice when fresh. It should be treated in the same way as vegetable marrow or aubergine (US: eggplant) and, like them, should be cooked before eating. Leaves and shoots are also edible when young.
Foot, leg or claw, generally of a bird. I remember one of my earliest visits to a respectable French restaurant in Rouen. My understanding of the menu was not great, and I ordered something in hopes that it would be edible. My plate arrived with a huge leg of some flying beast laid across it, the foot still attached, and sticking out over each side of my enormous plate. I decided that it was 'leg of gargoyle' it was so huge. Of course, it was delicious.
Horse mushroom. Edible, and very delicious, but easily mistaken for other less palatable or even poisonous mushrooms.
