[French] plural pattes

Foot, leg or claw, generally of a bird. I remember one of my earliest visits to a respectable French restaurant in Rouen. My understanding of the menu was not great, and I ordered something in hopes that it would be edible. My plate arrived with a huge leg of some flying beast laid across it, the foot still attached, and sticking out over each side of my enormous plate. I decided that it was 'leg of gargoyle' it was so huge. Of course, it was delicious.
