An early variety of tomato which produces long trusses of small, bright red, juicy fruits over a long period, if grown under cover.
Yellowfin bream. A handsome bream caught off the eastern coast of Australia and around estuaries and inshore reefs, usually found at around 30 cm (12") in length. The flesh is well textured and has good flavour.
The surf clam is a large ovoid clam, anything up to 15 cm (6 inches) across, with a yellowish shell with brown zig-zag markings, found in abundance in deep waters off the eastern coast of North America and South East Asia. This is most often cooked as one ingredient as part of a dish with many ingredients or in tinned, prepared dishes.
Doctorfish. Found in the Atlantic from Massachusetts to Brazil and in the northern Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, where it is most often eaten. It is a dark, often blue-grey to dark brown, but can change its colour and lighten considerably. This will depend on its habitat, being darker nearer reefs and paler over sandy bottoms. It has a sharp, scalpel like spine located on either side of the body on the caudal peduncle. The teeth, which can be seen in this photograph, are spatula-like in shapea dn are used for scraping algae off the rocks. They reach up 20 30 cm (12") in length. The flesh is of good quality but, if the fish have been feeding from dead corals or algae there is a faint possibility of some slight and temporary poisoning to the person who consumes the fish.
Indian spinach. This is most likely to be Basella alba, a tropical climbing plant that can grow as high as 2 meters (6 ft), the leaves being harvested as the plant grows and cooked in the same way as spinach or stewed in oil with spices. It is a type of amaranth, which includes many varieties of a sweetish green leafy vegetable known by many different names, including callalloo, elephant’s ear, African/Ceylon/ Chinese/Indian spinach, Surinam amaranth, etc.
Red mullet, surmullet. Sea woodcock. A high quality fish of a different family from the other (grey) mullets, and which has a far better flavour and lean, firm flesh. Its liver is highly prized. Do not confuse it with gurnard, which has a slightly paler colour. This fish may vary from pinkish-reddish crimson to rosy pink in colour with golden streaks and two long barbels on the chin.There is another smaller variety, Mullus barbatus, but this, Mullus surmuletus, is the most prized variety.
