Dragon fruit or pitaya. A striking purplish red or yellow fruit from Central America, twice the size of a passion fruit. It is pithy inside with an an unnaturally white sweet jelly with black pinpricks of edible seeds. I think it looks and tastes unnatural.
A name for crappie, a sunfish found in the Great Lakes and Mississippi valley. It has soft, lean white flesh and little flavour.

They provide an interesting accent to salads. The is plant prefers cool weather and damp mountain valleys but will tolerate heat. Native Americans used to use it as a dye.

Cape gooseberry. Physalis. Bitter-sweet, apricot-coloured berries enclosed in papery wraps. It may also be an arbutus berry.
