A name for the saucer scallop, a round scallop with 25 radiating ribs and smooth, polished shells. Two types are taken; the northern saucer around 8 cm (3") and Ballot's saucer (up to 14 cm (5½") and is fished off Queensland and Western Australia. The flesh is paler in colour, sweeter and firmer than other scallop varietes, making it very desirable.
A soft, rather bland doughy cake, often with blueberries and served in America for breakfast. I always feel a need to brush my teeth when I have eaten a muffin.
Wormwood, absinthe or mugwort is an aromatic plant with a scent of camphor used to flavour vermouth. It is also the name given to the potent drink, 68% alcohol, of the same name. Another species is used to flavour the liqueur génépi.
The mulberry is a tree which grows raspberry-like fruits with sweetish but tart flavour. Good for cooking purposes.
Grey mullet, the commonest and largest of the grey mullet (US: striped mullet) family. It is a silver, shoal-living fish pointed with dark grey which feeds on seaweed and plankton near the muddy bottom in estuaries and coastal waters. This can effect its flavour. However, a good grey mullet, caught in clean water, is round-bodied and has creamy white flesh and good flavour with good keeping capabilities. It must be thoroughly scaled before eating. Varieties are found all over the world. The roe is used for taramasalata, botargo, boutargue.
Burgoo. A soupy stew of meats, usually pork, veal, beef, lamb and chicken, beans, potatoes, corn, cabbage, okra, tomatoes, of French origin, popular in western Kentucky and Morgan and Lincoln counties of Illinois. Really it consisted of whatever was available - including one source which quotes squirrel's brains as an ingredient. It is said to have started life as a porridge for sailors.
