Joybells apple

A variety of yellow eating apple striped with red. It is soft and dry with a spicy flavour and distinctive aroma. It was probably raised at Brockwood Hospital in Woking in Surrey by Robert Lloyd and named Lloyd's Joybells some time between 1900 and 1910. It was then introduced commercially by Will Tayler of Godalming around 1920 and received the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Merit in 1922. This late-season variety is harvested from late September in South-East England and is at its best from October to December.

Jubilee apple

A name for Royal Jubilee, a large variety of yellow-skinned cooking apple raised by Mr John Graham of Hounslow in Middlesex in 1888. It was introduced commercially in 1893, the Jubilee year of Queen Victoria, hence its name. It retains its shape when it is cooked, making it good for tarts. This mid-season variety is harvested from late September in South-East England and is at its best from October to December.

Jubilee strawberry

A variety of strawberry introduced in 2002. A heart-shaped, aromatic, juicy variety with a wonderful mix of sweetness and acidity. Michael Bateman was completely bowled over by it. Jubilee is also a variety of tomato.

Jubilee tomato

A vigorous, high-yielding indeterminate variety of tomato producing medium-sized, globular, bright orange fruits up to 7.5 cm (3 inches) in diameter, weighing 170-350 g (6-12 oz). The fruits are thick walled with solid, meaty flesh. Looks good in salads. Jubilee is also a variety of strawberry.

Judas' ear fungus are enerally dried. Dried or fresh they should not be fried as they explode, but stewed with other ingredients. When found growing on wood they really do resemble ears. (If gathering mushrooms you must be absolutely certain what you have before you eat them as many are very poisonous.)

Jujubes. These are wrinkled, olive-shaped berries with a stone which grow on a shrub related to buckthorn. They ripen from green, through red to dark brown. It has sticky flesh slightly reminiscent of a date. They are mostly dried, crystallised or made into thick jelly like Turkish delight.

A very large, soft, juicy variety of eating apple raised by GW Schneider of New Jersey Agricultural Experimental Station in New Brunswick in New York State in 1949, from Petrel, Early McIntosh, Williams and Starr in 1949. It was introduced commercially in 1962. This early-season apple is harvested from mid-July in New Jersey and has poor storage properties.
