Joybells apple

/JOY-behlz/
[English]

A variety of yellow eating apple striped with red. It is soft and dry with a spicy flavour and distinctive aroma. It was probably raised at Brockwood Hospital in Woking in Surrey by Robert Lloyd and named Lloyd's Joybells some time between 1900 and 1910. It was then introduced commercially by Will Tayler of Godalming around 1920 and received the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Merit in 1922. This late-season variety is harvested from late September in South-East England and is at its best from October to December.
