In England, Cornish herring caught in August are good. They do not keep well and should be cooked soon after purchase.
A large variety of red eating apple thought to have been raised by Mr Herring of Lincoln and recorded in 1908. It was introduced commercially by Pearson's of Nottinghamshire. This mid-season variety is harvested from early September in South-East England and does not keep well.
The hibiscus flower is either made into long cooling drinks or can be dipped in batter and fried, in the same way as courgette (US: zucchini) flowers.
