Genoa is the anglicised name for Genova, a province and capital town of Liguria, a region along the coastline in the north west of Italy. Characteristic foods include pinenuts and basil, famously used in making pesto, gnocchi and ravioli as well as fish caught along the Ligurian coast.

Ivy gourd. A small crunchy gourd reminiscent of a gherkin, green ripening to red, popular in the cuisines of India, Thailand, Indonesia and other South East Asian countries. The shoots and leaves can also be eaten.

The geoduck is the largest of the giant clams with a texture similar to arkshell. It is eaten raw as shashimi in Japan. You may see it described as 'giant clam.' In China it is most often served in a sort of communal hotpot.

George Carpenter apple

A handsome variety of bright yellow eating apple flushed blushed with scarlet, raised by George Carpenter at West Hall Gardens in Byfleet in Surrey where he was Head Gardener in 1902 as a cross between Blenheim Orange and King of the Pippins. This mid-season variety is harvested from mid-September in South-East England and is at its best from October to December.

George Cave apple

A sweet aromatic eating apple with white, crisp flesh and green skin, flushed with rosy crimson. It was raised by George Cave in Dovercourt in Essex in 1923 and named by WP Seabrook & Sons in 1945. This early-season variety is harvested from early to mid-August in South-East England and does not store well.

George Neal apple

An old variety of flushed blushed, striped, dual-purpose apple, not readily available. It was raised in Kent, at Otford, br Mrs Reeves in 1904 and named after a nursery man in Wandsworth. It received the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Merit in 1923. This early-season variety is harvested from early to mid--August in South-East England and is at its best from August to September. Slices retain their shape when cooked.
