First in the Field tomato

A dwarf variety of tomato suitable for out door growth. It sets fruit early and produces large and well-flavoured crops. The tomatoes in the picture were brought to the Tomato Festival at Wimpole Hall. Unfortunately I did not hear about them until they had been cut up for inclusion in the tasting.

Things that swim, either in the sea or in fresh water - lakes, rivers, ponds and pools. They are mostly agreeable to eat, though if they have numerous bones they can be tricky. And some are poisonous, or parts of them are. Some are truly delicious.

fish and chips

Although this is claimed as one of the national dishes of the United Kingdom evidence suggests that the idea of frying fish was brought there by Portuguese Marranos, Jews who arrived as refugees in the 16th Century. John Walton, Professor of Social History at the University of Central Lancashire, told his students that anything could become a subject for research and took on fish and chip shops to prove his point. His group found that chips (US: fries) had been cooked in Irish Potato shops for some time but, in 1860, Joseph Malin, a Jewish immigrant from Eastern Europe, was the first to sell fish and chips together, starting a tradition of such shops in the East End of London. Such was the popularity of this dish in both the World Wars, the government struggled to keep rationing away from "fish and chips" as it was felt that the resulting loss of morale would be devastating.

Fishwort. A green leafy plant with a slightly fishy smell used in China, Japan, Korea and South East Asia. The roots may also be used and the plant is also used for medicinal purposes.

fish tamarind

The gamboge, sometimes know as fish tamarind, is a bright yellowish-orange fruit with an acid flavour. The segments are cut out and dried until they are almost black. They should be soaked before adding to fish curries or pickles. Sometimes used instead of tamarind to provide the sourness.

Fishwort or heartleaf is a green leafy plant with a slightly fishy smell used in China, Japan, Korea and South East Asia. The roots may also be used and the plant is also used for medicinal purposes.

fitweed

Long coriander. Stinkweed. A herb widely used in seasoning and marinating in the Caribbean. It is also used extensively in Thailand, India, Vietnam, and other parts of Asia as a culinary herb. This variety of coriander dries well, retaining good color and flavor, making it valuable in the dried herb industry. It is sometimes used as a substitute for cilantro, but it has a much stronger taste.
