A berry is a small fruit which has pulpy flesh enclosing seeds, such as a blueberry or redcurrant, or with a number of very small sacs clustered together such as a raspberry. The seeds are held in the pulp. Technically tomatoes, bananas and grapes are all berries. Itn many languages, including English, it also means the eggs of shellfish such as the lobster.

Bess Pool apple

A crimson flushed variety of eating apple discovered in a Nottinghamshire wood by Bess Pool, the daughter of an innkeeper in the late 1700s. It produces dry, crumbly flesh and this late-season variety is harvested from early to mid-October is stored and is at its best from November to March.

In veal, this cut consists of the ribs. In lamb, this is the vertebrae and first six rib bones counting from the rear of the animal, cut down the centre of the back bone. The ribs are usually shortened to about 10 cm (4 inches) and the ends of them scraped before cooking. The joint is also usually skinned and chined, that is the ribs are separated from the back bone to facilitate carving. It is used to make crown roast and guard of honour.
