Wild rice, native to North American, is the seeds of an aquatic grass that once grew wild around the American lakes, growing in shallow waters in small lakes and slow-flowing streams. It is a true water plant with sometimes only the flowering head of the plant protrudes above it. The genus is closely related to true rice, genus Oryza.
