In the UK this is invariably sausages cooked in a surrounding sea of Yorkshire pudding batter. However, as I learned during 'Here on Earth' on Wisconsin Public Radio, when various people called in to tell me, 'toad in the hole' in the US is a fried egg surrounded by corn-beef hash. I have checked my copy of 'The Joy of Cooking' and that is clearly correct.
