Rhône department in Rhône-Alpes around the river Rhône south east of Lyon producing mainly quite meaty, spicy red wines of good value. Chateauneuf du Pape, Cote Rotie, Hermitage, St. Joseph, these are all the great wine regions in France's Rhone valley. Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre are the main wine grapes here with Syrah mostly in the northern Rhone and Grenache in the southern Rhone. Famous wineries include Beaucastel, Bonneau, Janasse, Marcoux, Caillou, Brunel, Rayas, Vieux Donjon, Usseglio and Vieille Julienne, Aphillanthes and Soumade in the south and Guigal, Jamet, Ogier, Jasmin, Chave, Chapoutier, Tardieu Laurent, Jaboulet, Clape and Rostaing in the northern Rhone.
