Purple Cherokee tomato

[English] plural Purple Cherokee tomatoes

A variety of heirloom tomato from Tennessee, possibly developed by Cherokee Indians before 1890. It is an indeterminate variety the short vines of which produce smooth round fruits weighing 280-340 g (10-12 oz) with rosy brownish-purple skin and dark green, slightly ridged shoulders. The flesh is brick red and has a smoky sweet flavour. The fruits are disease and crack resistant and are produced in late season.
