loquat

plural loquats

The loquat is a small, slightly sour fruit, orange in colour and juicy. It resembles a smooth, discoloured apricot with a large, hard central stone inside. These are now grown around the Mediterranean and are good simmered in a rosewater or vanilla syrup. They should be peeled before eating and may be stewed or eaten raw.
