"Crescent." A crescent-shaped light, flaky yeast pastry for breakfast. The dough is cut into a triangle, buttered and folded four times and then formed to create the crescent shape. In 1686 the bakers of Budapest heard the Turks tunnelling into the city, presumably because they started work earlier in the day than anyone else. They sounded the alarm. The grateful city gave them the privilege of making croissants, whose shape comes from the emblem on the Ottoman flag.
