clove

[English] plural cloves

Cloves are the unopened flower buds of a tree, dried in the sun and originally found only in the Moluccas in Indonesia. They are now grown commercially in Madagascar, Zanzibar, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. They are used in sweet and savoury dishes. In the United Kingdom they are favoured with ham. Apparently the cloves of Indonesia are now used mainly in the production of a popular brand of cigarette, the Kretek.
