Corned beef. Cured, cooked, salted beef which is then pressed. It is called ‘corned’ because the Americans, to preserve the beef, covered it with "corns", large granules of salt. The name "bully beef" was popularised during World War One when tins of beef for army rations were labelled "bouillé" and the British soldiers struggled with the pronunciation.
