bar

/bahr/
[English]

A bar is a café selling drinks, or a place where drinks alone are sold, from behind a long counter or bar. In some cultures these are still the preserve of men. I always think of those bars as having high ceilings and neon lights with men playing chequers or backgammon, or low ceilings and practically no lights at all and isolated men drinking alone. In some places different rates will be charged for drinks in different parts of the bar, the cheapest being at the bar, the next at a table inside and the highest on the terrace or pavement outside.
