aphrodisiac

[English] plural aphrodisiacs

An aphrodisiac is anything which adds to the amorous or erotic senses. Many foods are believed to belong in this category, the most famous probably being oysters. Most aphrodisiac foods have become so because of their shape, such as asparagus, celery and bulbed chervil. Eating these foods with your hands, with a sauce dripping around lips and fingers, can only enhance the effect. Some foods do have their own sensuality, such as soft roes or truffles, because of smell or texture. It seems to me that almost anything can be found to be aphrodisiac, although it is more likely the wine that does the trick!
