Algarve is from the Arabic "al gharb", the west. It is a region and province along the southern end of the coast of Portugal, co-extensive with the district of Faro. It has a sub-tropical climate with vegetation reminiscent of northern Africa. Red, white and rosé wines are produced as well as a sherry-like dessert wine. It is also known for its Mediterranean fruits and fish.
