Traditionally served in the middle of the afternoon, latterly closer to 4.00 pm, a meal consisting of tea, cakes, biscuits (US: cookies) and dainty sandwiches, always with the crusts removed, sometimes scones. As children we had bread and jam (US: jelly) with this meal, which hardly seems to exist any more.
