Acorn

[English]

A truckle or drum of semihard cheese made with sheep's milk, reminiscent of Wensleydale. It has a crumbly paste which sometimes generates its own blue venining and has a golden, crusty, natural rind. It is made in Dyfed by Karen and Don Ross, Little Acorn Products, Mesen Fach Farm Bethania, Llanon, who also make Lady Llanover. This modern cheese is at its best in September and October, made from milk collected in May or June when the meadows are filled with herbs. It is made with raw, whole milk and contains 52% fat (dry). The curds are pressed. It is made with vegetable rennet so is suitable for vegetarians. It weighs 1.8-2.3 kg (3-5 lb).
