Mango fish, highly esteemed for food. It has several long, slender filaments below the pectoral fins. It appears in rivers, particularly the Ganges, at about the same time as the mango comes into fruit, around April to May, hence the name. Although it is also described as a strong flavoured sea fish usually dipped in besan and fried.
Indian salmon. A fish of rivers and lakes eating fish, frogs and algae as well as fruits that fall from overhanging trees. These fish are highly esteemed food fish but are in danger of being overfished. British anglers in India refer to them as Indian salmon.
Pigeon pea. Otherwise known as red gram or yellow lentil. These and chickpeas (US: garbanzo beans) are the most important in India.
