Figpecker. Figeater. A small migratory bird very similar to the blackcap. They are usually threaded on skewers and grilled. The main reason for their great popularity is that, as their name implies, they feed on figs, sweetening their flesh and giving them a desirable plumpness.

Felchen

Powan. Whitefish. Houting. Vendace. A small relation of char or lake whitefish and is a slightly oily freshwater fish of northern Europe, prepared in the same way as trout. It can be baked or fried.

Tree sparrow. Extraordinary to think of these birds as being eaten, but in times of food shortages they might be braised or cooked on a spit. How fortunate we are not to have lived in such hard times.

Rock pigeon. Rock pigeons breed in caves on steep cliffs, mainly on the coast but sometimes in the mountains. The city pigeons which are so ubiquitous are escapees which were originally kept in pigeon houses for meat, but then bred so successfully that they are now a pest.
