A large round rustic loaf of bread, typically white or sourdough. The name is for the rounded shape of the loaf and not the type of bread though french bread may be shaped as boules as often as it is formed as a baguette, though boules tend to have more character in terms of flavor and crumb than baguettes and stay fresh for longer.
