Tokay d'Alsace

[French]

A grape and wine of the Alsace region. The EU in Brussels decreed that, by March 2007, this wine should relinquish its name which may be confused with Tokay of Hungary, which had just joined the Union. Tokay (in English) is actually known as Tokaji in Hungary but it is still felt that this could be confused. Tocai friulano is in the same predicament. Serious wine drinkers would always know the difference between the Hungarian and the Italian and French wines, and non-serious wine drinkers wouldn’t really be bothered, so this was all rather pointless.
