toad in the hole

/tohd in thuh hohl/
[English]

In the UK this is invariably sausages cooked in a surrounding sea of Yorkshire pudding batter. However, as I learned during 'Here on Earth' on Wisconsin Public Radio, when various people called in to tell me, 'toad in the hole' in the US is a fried egg surrounded by corn-beef hash. I have checked my copy of 'The Joy of Cooking' and that is clearly correct.

to age

toast

/tohst/
[English]

Bread, generally sliced and then grilled or cooked in a toaster until crisp on the outside. In the United Kingdom toast is eaten with butter and marmalade for breakfast, or with soup or with various accompaniments, famously baked beans. Many hotels think it a good idea, for what reason I cannot imagine, to wrap their toast in a cloth in a basket, presumably to keep it warm. All it achieves is to make it soggy as the steam is absorbed back into the toast instead of escaping. Toast should be served in a toast rack, allowing air to circulate freely around each slice, and keeping it crisp.

toast rack tin

[English]

A rounded, fluted loaf tin. The loaf produced in it is called a Balmoral loaf. The flutings are the size of slices.
