The salmon is a migratory fish which always returns to its spawning grounds. This creates a hiatus of returning fish in good fettle for mating. The ones that succeed in the race up-river may have climbed salmon ladders, leaped up cataracts and other hazards. Waiting for them are likely to be fishermen, bears and other predators, keen to feast on the wonderful pink flesh of the wild salmon. Most is now farmed and lacks the musculature that renders the wild salmon so particularly tasty.
