Naples is the anglicised name of the province and port and capital town of Campania, Napoli. Naples is known throughout the world for its food, which was carried, particularly to North America by the poor of southern Italy, who went their to find a new way of life, taking their cuisine with them. Particularly well known are the pizza, ice cream and foods with tomatoes and aubergines (US: eggplant).
The Naples medlar is a slightly sour, juicy hawthorn berry, red, orange or yellow, the size of a crab apple and with rather similar properties, except the flesh is a bit wooly, with 3-4 hard seeds. They are used to make confectionary, liqueurs and jam (US: jelly) as well as eaten fresh.
