Plums are picked in late summer, soaked in sugar syrup for around six weeks, then dried in the sun. They became popular in England in the 19th century and were shipped over with bottles of port.
A variety of eating apple raised by Mr T W Macoun at Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa in 1915 in Canada using Northern Spy. This is a mid-season apple which is harvested from mid-September in South-East England and is at its best from September to October.
