It consists of crisp, flaky, sugared pastry raised around a filling of sultanas and currants amd flavoured with spices. A good Eccles cake is a great find. It originated in Eccles, now part of Greater Manchester.

Ecklinville apple

A variety of green cooking apple from Northern Ireland, raised near Portaferry by a gardener called Mr Logan around 1800. It cooks down to a purée. This is a mid-season variety harvested from early-September in South-East England and is at its best from September to November.
