vetkoek

/FEHT-kook/
[Afrikaans]

A dough mixture deep fried, eaten plain or with jam (US: jelly) or syrup or served with curried mince (US: ground meat) over the top. One of my favourites of my informant, Colleen Baker, whose Nan used to make it for her. She says that a "vetkoek is slightly larger than a cricket ball but can be made larger - about the size of a sandwich. It depends entirely on what you do with it. If you eat it with a sweet topping, it is generally a bit smaller than a savoury one. I guess its like saying "How big is a pancake?" Its really as big as you want it to be but cricket ball size is about the average"
