lapskaus

[Norwegian]

Lobscouse. A stew which used to be thickened with ship's biscuit (US: cracker), made on board. In Norway it comes in various forms: brown (brunlapskaus or bittlapskaus) with browned beef and potatoes; white (lyslapskaus or saltkjøttlapskaus) with salt meat, usually pork, potatoes and root vegetables, all eaten with flatbread.
