Kevada or vetiver (also called Khus). A tropical grass and its roots from which an aromatic oil is produced. In India, vetiver is used in khus water and khus syrup, which in turn are used to flavour sherbets. The roots are also steeped to make a beneficial tea which is said to be soothing and calming. The scent and flavor is similar to sandalwood but with citrus top notes.
Vetiver is used in ayurvedic medicine and in foods. However, the plant has deep thick bundles of roots that are helpful against soil erosion and the plant is good chopped up as an amendment to the soil. The leaves, aside from their culinary use are also used to weave strong and supple baskets, hats, mats, and the fiber may also have uses in cloth making.
