Holsteins originated in the two northern provices of North Holland and Friesland which lay on either side of the Zuider Zee. They were originally black and white cattle bred by Batacians and Friesians than which they provide milk which is richer and creamier. They flourished on the rich grasses of the region and became highly productive dairy cows. A Holstein cow reached the United States in the 1850s having kept the crew of her ship in milk for the voyage. Her productivity led to more Holsteins being imported. They are large, black and white or red and white cows.
