Guava. A fruit which originated in Central America and the West Indies and has the external appearance of an apple or pear. The large, pale, yellow-skinned ones are the best. Its heady fragrance perfumes many drinks and desserts or it is eaten as a fruit, dipped in either sugar or salt. They have a very strong and distinctive smell. I travelled overland to India by an 11,000 mile route in the mid 1970's. I smoked and my companion ate guavas the whole way, so we were about quits. I have hated them ever since - though we are still the very best of friends.
