ansjovis

/ahn-SHOOS. ahn-sho-vees/
[Swedish]

Anchovy. In the past ansjovis sometimes might have referred to sprats rather than anchovies, but this is certainly not the case now. Similar names to 'ansjovis' may be used to confuse the purchaser, particularly when buying fish pastes and sauces. Sprats may be used instead under these confusing names. Look out for "ägte ansjovis" (true anchovy) and you will get the real thing. Even more confusingly, manufacturers can used their name as prefix to ansjovis when using sprats. Another reason to look out for "ägte ansjovis
