The smooth clam or brown Venus shell is found on sandy or pebbly bottoms from the shores of Britain to the Mediterranean. The meat is fine and tasty. It is susceptible to algal 'red' blooms, in which case it may become dangerous to eat as it is a filter-feeder. They have thick, shiny light olive green to brown shells about 10 cm (4”) in length. The concentric and radial growth lines are easily seen.
