four-spot megrim

[English] plural four-spot megrims

The four-spot megrim has an elongated oval body, large eyes close together, both on the left hand side of the body. It has distinctive spots close to the tail, giving it its name. It can reach 40 cm (16") in length but is common at 10 to 30 cm (4 – 12"). It is greyish yellow in colour. Common in the western Mediterranean on sandy bottoms it is fished mainly with bottom trawlers. The flesh is good but a little dry but it is not fished commercially. Often cooked in a sort of stew mainly because of its dryness.
